•Don't spend too much time using closed guard. Instead use cross guard (or what we call cross guard at our gym, kind of a combination of traditional cross guard and spider guard) to maintain distance. It takes almost no energy to maintain this and the space makes it really easy to identify mistakes in your opponent's game as he tries to pass.
•Don't bother trying to use the standard dominant positions (Mount, Side Control, etc...) because you are easily reversed with little ability to counter. Instead use Knee on Belly or S Mount.
•If you end up with them in your closed guard be aggressive. I personally like using Upa attempts too set up a triangle...
•Stay out of Half Guard! Big guys can stuff you easily even if you have the underhook from the bottom... I would rather be mounted than to have a big guy in my half guard.
•If caught in Side Control be patient and get the inside knee up into his hip crease early. I have found that big guys will often go for the obvious power move (e.g. - Americana) and it is easy to counter as they shift their weight to try to secure the lock.

-always try and keep your legs between you and him
-prevent side control by lifting your knee to your chest and get GOOD at spinning on your back and alway s try to square up with him
-work on your RG!!!! A regular double wrist control guard is going to get busted open by a guy 50lbs bigger than you. The RG REALLY does keep him broken down
-be patient. You are going to be in a battle. A smaller guy can win but you've got to gas your opponent a bit. When you (him) are tired, MISTAKES are made and that is when you capitalize.
-learn SUBMISSIONS. If you are one of those guys who thinks knowing just basics or 4 submissions is all you need, you are dead wrong in my opinion. having a tool box with lots of tools is essential, ESPECIALLY when you face someone bigger than you. These tools are EXPERIENCE, nothing more. They are TRICKS which you'll need in a battle like this. Throwing something at a guy that he has never seen will catch him or keep him guessing until you can secure something.
